Cleaning Your Produce

Prepare the Solution:

  • In a clean bowl or container, mix together cold water, baking soda, and vinegar.

    • Use approximately 1 tablespoon of baking soda and a quarter cup of vinegar per gallon (about 4 liters) of water.

    • Stir the solution until the baking soda and vinegar are dissolved.

  • Soak the Produce:

    • Submerge the fruits and vegetables in the prepared solution.

    • Ensure that all surfaces of the produce are covered by the solution.

  • Soak Time:

    • Let the produce soak in the solution for about 5 to 10 minutes.

    • This soaking time helps to loosen dirt, pesticides, and other residues from the surface of the fruits and vegetables.

  • Agitate (Optional):

    • If desired, gently agitate the produce in the solution with your hands or a soft brush.

    • This can help dislodge any stubborn debris.

  • Rinse Thoroughly:

    • After soaking, remove the fruits and vegetables from the solution.

    • Rinse them thoroughly under running water to remove any remaining baking soda, vinegar, and loosened residues.

    • Ensure that all traces of the solution are washed away.

  • Dry and Store:

    • Pat the washed produce dry with a clean kitchen towel or allow them to air dry.

Once dry, store the fruits and vegetables as usual.

Using this method can help to effectively clean fruits and vegetables, removing surface dirt, pesticides, and bacteria. Remember to always use fresh baking soda and vinegar for best results.
